YAMAMOTO Hideaki

"Even the most skilled lacquer master cannot always apply the lacquer flawlessly. One has to pay attention to the conditions that are present, the temperature, the humidity, the character of the lacquer one is using and one has to adjust one’s approach accordingly. One has to listen to the lacquer, so to speak. That requires a lot of concentration. After a day of  surface lacquering, I’m totally exhausted.

I can tell you a lot about craftsmanship, about the importance of choosing good materials, about the long process of working out the form and such things, but that’s actually only one half of the work. The other half is living a happy, fulfilled life. Someone who doesn’t know what good food is and doesn’t take joy in delicious food will never make good vessels."
