KANESHIGE Makoto

"I spent ten years working in my father’s workshop, preparing clay, setting up and firing the kiln, without firing my own pieces."

To achieve one’s own expression it’s important that one has the wish not merely to create individual works, but rather to work on one’s own self.

My father never taught me a technique, he only said: look at a lot of good things. That’s the only way to get a perspective on the strengths and weaknesses of your work.

For me a piece is successful when it’s simple and has depth. Simple and deep, two words that best describe what my work is about for me.”
